Silk is the most sensitive of all common garment fibers. It’s a protein-based material — structurally similar to human hair — and reacts poorly to water, heat, and friction. In Dubai, sweat is a particular threat: the amino acids in perspiration react with silk’s protein chains, causing permanent yellowing and weakening within a single season of wear.

Water distorts silk’s weave, causes dye bleeding in multi-colour pieces, and creates irreversible watermarks — even from a small splash. Agitation in a washing machine breaks the delicate protein bonds, leading to a rough, dull texture that no amount of conditioning can restore.

Professional dry cleaning uses solvent-based processes that lift oils, sweat, and stains without introducing water or agitation. For silk blouses, scarves, sarees, and formal wear, this is the only safe method. The cost of dry cleaning is always less than replacing a silk garment.

Wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales — similar to roof tiles layered on top of each other. Under heat, moisture, and mechanical agitation, these scales interlock and become permanently locked together in a process called felting. The result is catastrophic: a full-size sweater can shrink to half its original dimensions in a single wash. Once felted, wool cannot be restored.

Even with a wool-specific detergent and a delicate cycle, home washing is risky. Water temperature fluctuations during a machine cycle, combined with the spin action, create exactly the conditions that trigger felting. Fine wool, merino, and cashmere are especially vulnerable and should always be dry cleaned.

Heavier-structured wool coats and blazers should be dry cleaned primarily to preserve their shape and internal construction, not just the fibers themselves.

Cotton is the most forgiving of all common fabrics and the most washing-friendly. Unlike protein fiber, cotton is plant-based and does not felt, dissolve in water, or react chemically to standard detergents. Most everyday cotton garments — t-shirts, jeans, casual shirts, bed linen — can be washed at 30–40°C on a normal cycle without issue.

That said, not all cotton is equal. Pre-shrunk cotton (most modern basics) is stable. Unsanforised cotton found in raw denim and some heritage brands — will shrink significantly in the first wash. Dark cotton fades under high temperatures; always wash darks at 30°C or below and turn garments inside out.

Structured cotton garments — formal shirts with stiff collars, cotton suits, heavily embellished pieces — benefit from professional laundering to preserve their press, stiffness, and shape far better than a home wash can achieve.
